In the case of Malacca Strait?

Do you think the presence of NATO in the area is reasonable? If not, who has the proper authority of policing that very crucial bottleneck?

NATO is hardly involved at all ... except for the occupational war ship passing through. The responsibility to keep the strait safe for shipping has been left up to Malaysia and Indonesia.

Singapore with the most modern navy in the region did volunteer a role in keeping the strait safe. Malaysia and Indonesia refused the Singapore Navy permission to enter it's waters. Nationalistic pride.

    Dumb if you ask me.

In 2004 Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore started coordinated naval patrols stepping up the presence they have in the area.

So at the moment, NATO is not needed. Besides, NATO vessels are needed to patrol of the coast of Somalia.
