Computer won't recognize DVDs or games in the D drive?

Okay, so I had a virus, cleared all of my computer out, reinstalled my Windows XP software and some random drivers (I actually wasn't sure which do which) and popped in my Sims 3 game to download it. Of course, the disc isn't even being RECOGNIZED by the D-drive.

I tested some things out and if I put in a DVD, the Driver says "DVD/CD ROM" and if I click it, it just goes into the folders of the CD (and doesn't play the movie). So it's recognized, but doesn't play.

I put in a plain old CD and was able to burn it onto iTunes, no questions asked. So I guess that was recognized, too, and usable.

I have a Inspiron Dell computer that is like... 7 years old lol. Service Tag: 45G68C1. Sooo any specific drivers I need to download or something?? And, if so, how do you open a '.application' file, because when I tried to before my computer doesn't have any software to open that kind of file with so I can't download the driver!

AGH! Help? Thanks :)

Update:

@Ryan

Well, under properties it says:

Disk Drives: Fujitsu MHW2120BH

Disk Drives: WD 5000AAV External USB Device (I Think this is my external Hard drive)

DVD/CD-RW: Philips DVD+RD SDVD8820

And @ The first person, I don't think a SR would work because I completely wiped my computer, so there is nothing to recover :/

Update 2:

@Speednut

Kay, I tried all of that annnndddd it didn't work.

I also messed up in the description above: the DVDs make my computer crash (the start menu/bar disappear and everything locks u p) and it's the game discs that I'm allowed to peek into.

And yeah your suggestion didn't work, but it sounds like you know what you're doing. Any other suggestions?? And btw, I'm more concerned about the games not working than the DVDs. I have a TV, but I don't have another thing to play this $60 games on. *sigh* I'm so frustrated :(

    Ok, what you are missing is the DVD codec that decodes the dvd. If you can enter the DVD files, then obviuosly the drive functions properly it just dont have the software to convert it to an image on your screen. You will need a program call WINDVD or else POWER DVD. There is a generic DVD codec that will work. Just do a search for VLC MEDIA PLAYER and download it.

    Now once you have downloaded the codec, then you have to configure it to to autoplay when you put in a dvd in the drive.

    go to MY COMPUTER > right click on the DVD Drive > and select properties

    select the Autoplay tab (on the top)

    next you will see a menu box (usually starts with "music Files"). Here select DVD movies. Now below that menu box will be a list of programs to use. make sure and select VLC Player and click on OK or Apply.

    There you go, you are finished. Just restart the computer and insert your DVD and then wait for it start automaticly.

    Good luck and let me know if you need any other help.

    It sounds like your drivers are outdated, or a recent program you have installed has corrupted them. Do you know what brand and model your dvd drive is? Because this would help in finding drivers alot.
