Question about a Dell Dimension 3000?

The PC was hit by a power surge & does not work. I tried replacing the power supply & power cord-not it. The hard drive is fine; I am currently using it in this PC. When I tried to turn it on, I saw one light on the motherboard, but nothing else would come on-no fan or anything. Is it the motherboard itself, or could it be the processor? Or a combination of both? I'm just trying to figure out if it is worth fixing or to just get a new one.

Update:

Unfortunately, I did have a surge protector. Lightning hit right across the road from my house, and it bypassed the protector. The $20.00 surge protector still works fine; the $700.00 PC does not. Go figure.

If you are not even getting a fan to come on then your motherboard is probably bad. Your processor could also be bad also but you can usually get a motherboard a lot cheaper than a processor so I would start with the motherboard first. Might be an opportunity for upgrading the system. Good Luck

When you get a electrical spike that damages the power supplies sometimes it hits the main board too. Computer repair of the power supply just entails replacing it like you did. However, it sounds like you main board needs to be replaced too. The main board actually controls the start up of the system including full start up of the power supply. In the old days the power supply was not controlled by the main board. However int he late 90's the main board was giving the added function of controlling the power supplies output. Usually when the main board goes bad it is not worth it to repair unless you have a high end system (value above $800).

Hard to say which it is.

NEVER neglect to use a surge protector with electronics.

I am anal about this, and plug a surge protector into a surge protector, they are cheaper than new electronics.
