Problem with a gateway NV series laptop freezing.?
I am fixing a gateway NV series laptop for someone. It has been freezing soon after booting up, in safe mode and normal. I did virus scans and malware scans, some files were cleaned. but the scans would nto complete due to the freezing. I spoke with the person and asked if i would be able to just reformat. They were fine with this. Since it's a gateway, it did'nt come with the CD's So i used the ALT+F10 method to go into the repair feature of windows 7. this took a while, as it would also freeze while loading the files. After a few tries It went, and i was able to start the restore to factory defaults. How ever, again, it frooze during this process. After a third try the restore completed. When windows started up, it frooze again on the "Starting services" screen. When it went back in after a few more tries, i get a popup saying that it has had an unexpected restart and the install will nee to start over.
I just want to know if anyone has an idea why this freezing is happening. It's not only happing in windows but during the restore process as well.
It's running windows 7, 4 gigs of ram, 2.56 duo core, 500GB HDD. it's a Gateway NV series.
Anyone have an idea. I've tried reseating the ram already as well.
Thanks,
Thanks for the info, I'll try that and see how it goes.

It could be a failing hard drive.
Have you tried booting and using the system to a LiveCD version of Linux, or Windows PE? This would enable you to use the system for diagnostic purposes, to determine if the hard drive is causing these issues, since you would be eliminating the hard drive for the duration of your tests. http://www.linuxmint.com/ is a good version of Ubuntu that comes with all the necessary drivers to use that Gateway (including the wireless) without installing a thing. You just download the ISO, burn a disc, boot the computer to the disc, and use the OS. If the system locks up while using it, you know it is hardware based, and that it is NOT the hard drive.
If you have a copy of XP Pro somewhere, you SHOULD make yourself a copy of Bart PE. This is a Windows Preinstallation environment that runs from a CD. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ when making one, it is important to follow the Adding Drivers instructions http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/help/english/drivers.h... to ensure that you add SATA support to your build. The benefit to having a copy of BartPE around (the more you examine this tool, the more uses you will find for it, btw) is that you have a Windows based diagnostic tool, with essentials like CHKDSK at your disposal. And again, if the computer operates fine when booted to BartPE, you know the problem is not the RAM or the motherboard... you can localize the problem to the only piece of hardware that BartPE (or Linux LiveCD) eliminates, namely the hard drive.
