what kind of education is needed in early childhood intervention-specifically working with autistic children?

I am considering a career change-have worked for many years in daycare.I have had an autistic child in my class for 2 years and found it rewarding to help him learn and gain more independence.

Depends on which role you'd like to play. Special Ed and Teachers of Students with Disabilities are degree programs that work with the instructional end. Behavior Analysts work with emotional/behavioral/social goals and programming. Social Workers can play the role of a case manager. School Psychologists can play the role of consultant and developing programming as well.

Which role did you most enjoy? If it was the instruction and teaching of academics, I'd go Spec. Ed or TSWD; If it was teaching functional skills, behaviors and communication, go Behavior Analyst; if it was working with other people behind the scenes, maybe Social Work; if it was working with others and as a team, maybe School Psychologist.

Its always takes a team to keep these programs running, try and find where you would fit!
