In long distance runs, what statement keeps you motivated?

I use " I will win" over and over when running longer distances (12-18 miles). What inspirations do you use to keep motivated?

Suffice to say the phrase that comes to mind when the line shows up is, "You have no excuse."

You don't run long distance at the same pace you run a mile (at least if you're racing them). If you want to exceed a mile in training, try not to go over "conversational" pace. In other words, you should be able to carry on a conversation without too much difficulty while running, and not find yourself winded and wanting to crash. The more you get used to the distance, the faster you'll go at a comparable effort level. Anyway, you shouldn't be getting winded if you're running at a good pace for distance right now. Slow it down overall and you'll be able to go farther. Also, try to breath slowly and deeply from your "stomach" rather than huffing and puffing from your chest.

if I'm going on a run for that long, which I havent done in weeks, I usually bring my iPod with me and listen to my workout playlist it's all these songs that really set a fire in my stomach to keep me going. If I'm racing a 5k I just try not to think about the pain and I will count things like the trees. I try not to focus on my stride as much either the best thing to do is not to think if you're not thinking then you wont feel the pain (I don't reccomend you stop thinking if you're running the city streets, you know, cars and stuff, becareful)

well, lol, when i'm on runs anything more than 12 miles (usually once a week)....i say f*ck, i don't want to stop and have to call for a ride, i'm 8 miles away from my house..lol..............but seriously, i have a play list on my ipod that keeps me motivated, and if i'm not listening to music, i am running with a friend and we push each other on

Once your done, you won't have to do it again. Get it over with. Don't think about ANYTHING but breathing and winning the race!! You will be happy when you are holding the trophy!!

I just tell myself when its over, you know you've done a good workout AND you might get to brag about how far you ran. Also I know that these are going to help me run faster.

If you run with a friend its easier to keep running. I tell myself i bible verse " I can do all things through God who strengthens me". That keeps me motivated

Honestly, for me it's "Push Yourself." I found this new website called pushyourself.com and they sell shirts and let you share stories about the things you've done. It really moved me to try as hard as I can to go above and beyond what I think I'm able to do.
