Why are there so many generic avatars?

Everyone's taste is different, and some may even like to lie by posting avatars which are really not in line with their personalities. There are also those who want to be different than what Yahoo offers, and still those who seem to be shy (no avatar picture), which may give them the audacity of asking questions which otherwise they would not dare to ask (yes, that shy).

By posting your own picture, you make me admire your guts. Exposing yourself to remarks from less "academic" readers is a true reality, although I suspect you care less, relying on a secure sense of personality to ignore them.

Personally I like to see a person's photo but I must admit it took me a long time to make the decision to change mine from an Avatar to a photo of myself. I do change it now and again back to an Avatar because I get fed up of looking at myself! It is not, however, my real name. My son thought I looked a bit like Jennifer Rush one day when she was singing on the TV.

A lot of users don't know how to upload a photo and others prefer to remain completely anonymous with the grey happy face.

Most people just either don't care or don't know how to change it. Probably more of the latter.

Because when you can't be as good as mine, why bother?
