Driving from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon in 2 weeks - should I rent a Convertible car?

It costs twice as much to rent a convertible as it does for a compact car (which is what I kind of prefer), but the person who organized the trip thinks Convertible might be fun. The road trip is 1 week, so it won't be a short term thing. I do worry about the excessive heat, noise, and theft... making me think that we would have the top up for most of the trip, thereby negating the need to spend so much for a convertible experience.

You will have the top up for most of the trip with the A/C blasting. You should expect temperatures in the upper 90 degrees in a couple of weeks. Another problem you will run into with your top down is dust. The trip to Grand Canyon is dusty.

Las Vegas is a town that's something for everyone therefore find it with hotelbye . Las Vegas is a town with good attractions and some of those is the popular Las Vegas Strip; where tourists can enjoy a walk in the hot leave morning, or take a stroll downtown and see a spectacular gentle reveal that spans a whole block, the Fremont Street Experience. Readers also can get a view of amazing world popular re-creations like erupting volcanoes, the Eiffel Tower and the Sphinx of Egypt before the different accommodations and casinos. Las Vegas is a city that constantly reinvents itself, therefore even although you have already been here before you will never run out of enjoyment what to do.

The south rim is inside the Grand Canyon National Park. It is completel safe, and the roads are all paved. It is a long drive to complete a round trip in one day. The south rim is the most senic area of the Grand Canyon. It will be crowded on July 4th. If this is your only chance to see the canyon then go for it. I suggest that you plan a trip to the Grand Canyon and stay a few days at one of the lodges inside the park. Make your reservation well in advance. Hike the trails and take in all that the park has to offer. Vegas can be a short stop on your way in or out.

Summer temperatures are here or will be by end of May. You can get by with a convertible. If it's too hot, use the roof and hit the A/C. Definitely OK to go "roofless" in the morning & evenings. I would definitely lean toward convertible if you are passing through Las Vegas and taking in The Strip.

    Absolutely positively rent one

Wear a baseball cap ,long loose fitting pants and keep the top down for every mile that you can.

In the unlikely event that the temp on the short Mojave Desert portion of your trip is too hot, turn the AC on and aim the vents at your chest

Here's current GCNP weather...note that the low is 35 F

Just so you know the S.Rim of GCNP is in a Ponderosa Pine forest at 7000 ' msl and I've never seen a dust storm on the either rim

Blizzards ? Yes , Dust storms ? No

Do this awesome routing in the direction given

The route is beyond scenic and will make you ecstatic that you took my suggestion to rent a convertible

Convertibles are great for crusing up and down the vegas strip, but not so good on the highway and out in the desert heat. You are not going to spend much time in your car while at Grand Canyon.

The one way to think of it is that with the comvertible, you have the top down option, even if you don't use it. Somehow, I think every trip is an adventure and try to take as much as is comfortable. But, scrap the soft top on this one. We are in the 80s already and it's just going to get warmer. Earmark the saved money for something else special to do so your xompanion won't feel bad about it.

If you want to see the real Grand Canyon go to the South Rim of the park. The part of the GC that is most advertised, is on an Indian Reservation at the extreme West of the canyon. There are really lots of places that you can see easily on way to the South Rim. Lake Mead http://vegasnature.com/LakeMead.htm Hoover Dam http://vegasnature.com/HooverDam.htm Colorado River http://vegasnature.com/ColoradoRiver.htm Oatman http://vegasnature.com/Oatman.htm Grand Canyon http://vegasnature.com/GrandCanyon.htm on the way back stop in Laughlin http://vegasnature.com/Laughlin.htm http://www.vegasnature.com/ has videos of each area followed by maps showing how to get there. You may want to email their trip advisor also.

Have fun do the convertable if you can afford it.

From Vegas to the Canyon is a pretty long drive. After about an hour you are going to be sick of the convertible. The wind, the bugs and you won't be able to hear each other or the radio. It sounds like fun at first but trust me it will get old fast.

You will be traveling in the Mojave Desert and if the weather is over 90 you might be very hot. But the experience is one of a lifetime. Just do not leave anything of value in the car, even just to "run in."
