most computers do not work that way. If you have a mac, you can easily do it (much faster than usb anyway) with a standard ethernet cable, and if you are running windows a crossover cable will work for what you want to do. Below are some links to help you out

Can you? Yes, Simply, No.
There is a nice article here http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/248 on how to do that, but it would probably be cheaper to just use a crossover cable, as long as your laptop has a network interface which it will unless it's reaaaaally old.
