Open Office is VERY safe. Its made by Sun Microsystems, a very large and respectable company.
They are big developers on the the web, not only in software tech, but the hardware tech behind much of the websites we visit.

Let me add Oo (open office) is my choice of office suite since its a) free b) compatible with every format imaginable and c) has superior extensibility.
Open Office is a hefty download, around 500MB I think. My criticism is that its a bit large of a install for what I use (which is ONLY its word processing.
If you ONLY want it for basic typing and spelling there are other more lightweight options such as 'Abi Word' http://www.abisource.com/ that only use about 5 to 10 mb of space.

It's safe as long as you download it from the OpenOffice.org site.

Should be fine if you use a reliable source. Try CNET's download.com.
