skyes,
Can't be done the DVD Recorders have two problems that hurt their sales the first being no Composite input as this was not given to them due to Copyright infringements. The second was "real time recoding" I found that out the hard way what to watch while you wanted to record a movie for a later.
The only workaround that we found was to have another DVR or Basic Cable box and use the feed of that all by its self so we could watch whatever we wanted in another location.
I hope this helps you out with what you were looking for......

You can really only do that with a PC based DVR with a Hauppauge HD-1212 or the Avermedia counterpart to it.
No consumer standalone DVR tunes or records in HD, and has a DVD recorder built in.
No provider HD-DVR has a DVD at all.
You can get DVD/HDD recorders that record analog SD from a cable/satellite box, or QAM/ATSC directly, but downconvert to SD to record and show on the TV.
With an HD model TiVo, copy protection permitting, you can record from cable directly, and trasnfer over the network and author a DVD in HD.
