Unfortunately, street music isn't appreciated by most people anymore. :-(
In Paris, France it's still a hugely common occurrence though.
However, I'm from Daytona Beach, Florida, in the USA. There's not a whole lot of local bands here, and the ones that do exist are more surreal about their music and writing than they are artistic. I don't need anything flashy looking or even something necessarily fast, but I do need to play music that has taken me a good, long amount of time to write. I like my music to sound full, and well rounded, much like one such Andy McKee. Except, his skill far surpasses the majority of guitarists you'll find.
There are a few street guitarists I've seen here who are very, very skilled and are amazing at writing music. From what I've seen and know about them though from when I've spoken to them, they wander between towns, because they have a strong feeling and connection between street music and people.
This is a dying, under-appreciated art form in today's society. When I saw musicians playing and painters painting on the streets of Paris, France, I was overjoyed by artistic inspiration. Most people in the U.S. are cold, and don't understand things like this. It's unfortunate how most people lack artistic inspirational intake now days.

Yes, there is music in this, and heart. Thank you for coming to us with this contribution, rare for you to post a poem. 'Johnny Cash or Bobby Dylan; He knows them off by heart, Neither a saint, nor a villain; Playing for love of art. Joni Mitchell or Paul Simon; He digs the folksy tunes, Never fussin', nor a whinin', The man just loves his blues. Jimi Hendrix or Van Halen; He also likes to rock, Hear his guitar loudly wailin' While a few people flock.' Great examples of the genres.

the closest town in my area that has street musicians is st. augustine. the only thing we have in my town is an occasional church carnival with a few locals showing off their musical talents.(st. augustine is approximately 30 miles west of my home town.)
