Kapersky PDM KEY LOGGER?

My Aunt has a new HP PC from this January and they have windows 7 with Kapersky anto virus provided from Best buy. She has encounter a type of issue where at certian points Kapersky will monitor something called PDM KEY LOOGER in the system. As she checks her report as of when this trojan or virus is found it shows that Kapersky was not even protecting her pc. Occasionally when this happens her PC will freeze for a few seconds. I'm sure it's not a big deal but she is concerned and wants to know if this KEY LOGGER is really dangerous. If anything can someone recommend a newer and better anti virus? Thank you very much in advance.

Update:

**Thank you Michael...very good advice! And thank you for the forum links directly to Kaspersky support...this will help everyone understand it much better.

Is it normal, though, for Kaspersky to say that it's not active? Sometimes when I check the log it will say "Kaspersky not present"...do you know what that is and if it's a problem too?

Thank you so much to all who suggested AVG as well.

Update 2:

Michael - thanks for the links...I editted a couple of things on her settings based on the support link you gave me, ran a scan, and everything seems to be okay. I talked to her yesterday about all of this and she's still curious as to who, or what site certain trojans and things are coming from. I don't think there's a way to find out...there's just so many out there all the time that if Kaspersky doesn't tell you the name of the thing, you'll never be able to look it up and find out. She's just super worried all the time about people trying to get her info. Even Best Buy geek squad told her she was fine, but she didn't like that answer either. :)

I will tell her about the Green status and Yellow, etc. that you wrote me about...maybe that will ease her mind a bit.

Well the Kaspersky forum is full of questions about PDM Keylogger and their answer is always the same......

Nothing to be worried about. See http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=168...

Many people are not happy with this response but thats all they

will give you. This only started with KIS 2010 and is their proactive defense being a shade

to pedantic.....picking up logitec mouse and nearly all games like world of warcraft as acting

like a keylogger as soon as it starts up.....they even flag Sony Vaio as a pdm keylogger.

Anyway i dont understand what you mean by "As she checks her report as of when this trojan or virus is found it shows that Kapersky was not even protecting her pc.....in my opinion they are

over zealous in their protection and when it freezes for a moment they are checking it out and

always decide its ok and that is why they do not give you the option to allow/disallow or even block

it themselves.....believe me if they thought it was harmful they would block it.

So to sum up.. The riskware category is related to legitimate tools and in a few cases, malware. Most of the time, the riskware is legitimate. Kaspersky is making you aware of its presence since there is a remote possibility it may have been maliciously installed. Kaspersky will block, delete, or quarantine anything that might do serious harm to your computer. Many legitimate applications such as games can cause this type of malware detection-like in Kaspersky. What you are seeing is probably a pro-active detection by KIS on legitimate software.

Regarding your last point KIS 2010 is one of the top A/Virus and will protect you better than most

others so while you may not have this warning popping up with another A/V you may have worse.

Put this in exclusions as they say and keep your Kaspersky is my advice.

EDIT....No i have not seen that before and i would only be guessing but the antivirus has no firewall or email protection and it could be just telling you Kaspersky not present or active in that part of the log. http://www.kaspersky.com/compare

Keystroke logging (often called keylogging) is the action of tracking (or logging) the keys struck on a keyboard, typically in a covert manner so that the person using the keyboard is unaware that their actions are being monitored. There are numerous keylogging methods, ranging from hardware and software-based approaches to electromagnetic and acoustic analysis. The "moron" is incorrect. What you would be referring to is a remote administration tool, like Logmein Ignition. A keylogger is considered malware, and is potentially unwanted software. Hackers use keyloggers to record your passwords, and this allows them to steal your account. However, you can put a keylogger onto your on computer if you really wanted to.
