No it is not the same.

Sticky rice or glutinous rice can be bought from most Chinese, or more likely Thai shops.

There are plenty round the country, but you have to ask around.

a good place to locate such things in the UK is a website www.thailand-uk.com

If you mean sticky rice in Thai cuisine, it's the rice "Thai people in the northern and northeastern regions eat sticky rice (also known as sweet rice) in place of long grain rice. It is eaten with your hands by making a little ball and dipping it into other dishes.

While most people used to make it with a steamer, the microwave seems much easier. The grains come out a little stickier, but unless you are eating with your hands, you barely notice.

When you choose your rice, make sure you buy and use Sticky Rice. Sticky rice is not jasmine rice. If you try to cook jasmine rice this way, it will cook, but it will not taste or feel like sticky rice."

It's not the same as pudding rice. If you're in Central London, you can buy it from most oriental supermarkets in Soho. I think it should be available in any oriental supermarket with Thai products across the UK too.

Sticky Rice is a Glutinous rice that sticks together when cooked!

It is short grain compared to most rice.... Common in countries like Thailand.... Where it is often steamed and formed into rice-cakes as part of bigger dishes!

If you have a specialist food store (such as one of the big Asian Supermarkets) near you...they'll be able to get it, if not already in stock!.... Failing that, try going to your nearest 'China Town' (London, Birmingham & Manchester in UK)!

    Hope this Helps!

if you're thinking of making sushi, get the special sticky rice from a chinese supermarket.

when in a pinch, you can boil normal white rice (not a boil-in-the-bag) and maybe overboil it a bit to make it a little mushy, then shape immediately so it'll set in the right shape. But it won't taste the same and is a bit messy to use.
