Three men walk into a motel and ask a clerk, "how much for a room"? The clerk says it will be $30. So, each man gave the clerk $10 each and go to their room.
The clerk realized he charged the mem $5 too much. So, he gives the bell boy 5 singles and tells him to go give it to the men.
On the way to the room, the bellboy thought to himself, " how am I going to split 5 singles between 3 men?"
So he puts $2 in his pocket and gives the men $1 each. Now the men have each paid $9 for the room.
each man paid $9 for the room 9x3=27
and bellboy has $2 27+2=29

The money didn't "go" anywhere. It's the confusing wording that makes it seem like there's a missing dollar.
So they originally pay $30. Then the manager realizes it's really $25. So each man was supposed to pay approximately $8.33. Plus the five extra reimbursed dollars, which divide up to the bellboy's $2 tip and each man's one dollar back. $8.33 times 3 men is $25, plus the extra $5 is still $30.
