How is banning the burka any less oppresive than the burka itself?

If it is said that forcing muslim women to cover their entire bodies is oppresive, how are we any better in forcing them not to wear it?

Some people are using the "oppressive" label as justification for removing the burqa, but that shouldn't be the motivation for it's banning. I think it should be more about that fact that people find it "offensive", me included. I feel it is a slap for modern society, a sign that "I don't want to be part of this society or interact with you". I am hearing conflicting arguments from the Muslim community, one side saying that the Koran requires it, while another side says that it is optional. I think it should be banned because it can be a very disturbing/unsettling thing to see. Walking down the street with a shirt emblazoned with foul language or offensive slogans/pictures is unacceptable, and I feel the burqa fits into that category.
