Is it still necessary to use distilled water in a BMW battery? The current battery was made by Excide.?
I have been careful not to overfill the individual battery cells with "purified" water such that the battery plates are covered, but the cells themselves are not too full. There is no evidence of spillage or electrolye corrosion in, on, or under the battery, which sits under the rear seat.

Yes - batteries still use purified or distilled water. (The two are not exactly the same, but close enough for our purposes.) Minerals poison batteries. Pure water is lost in normal operation through electrolysis, so water is used to replace it.
If you look in the cells you will see a baffle in each one - a ring of plastic around the top with a slit in each side. The proper fill level is to the bottom of the ring, while the minimum level is the top of the plates.

As long as the plates are covered there is no problem.Adding more is fine but not necessary.

most of the batteries today have a sealed top. they fill them at the factory.
