My dog has dry itchy skin... how can I help him?
I just got a new dog a few days ago and I've noticed he has really dry skin on his back near his tail. I thought it was a hot spot but it isn't red, oozing, no hair loss and no swelling. It's kinda flaky and obviously driving the poor guy nuts because he's always scratching and biting. I'm taking him to the vet next week but I feel bad letting the little guy suffer with the itchies that long. I've heard that feeding him some olive oil or an egg every day will help... is this true? If anything, what else can I do to help the situation?
*I have no idea what this dog was fed before I got him but he is now eating Iams dry dog food. He was a rescue, taken from a home where he was locked up in a tiny room and only let out for an hour once a day. I am working on nursing him back to health but won't have the money for a vet visit until next week... so I would prefer if you had suggestions for home treatments.

Oatmeal shampoo and canidae(http://www.canidae.com/) dog food helps with skin irritation problems due to poor diets. I run huskies and do weight pulling and all sorts of other things with them, so it's also real good for high performance too. My one rescue had prickly hard fur with dandruff, a little while on that food and she's soft fuzz ball. Hope this helps.

raw egg is good for dogs coats, i'm not sure about olive oil though, but i doubt either of these would work.
Apple cider vinegar is the way to go, you buy it at health food stores, it's really cheap, only a little bit more expensive than regular vinegar. you just put some on a dry cloth and dab it onto the itchy spot. i've used this on my dog before and a friends dog who gets a terrible rash on her tummy and it helps soothe the itch, just try a little at first to make sure he won't have a reaction to it but if it seems ok put some more on.
apple cider vinegar is great for people and dogs, it's one of those "natures wonder foods" type things, if you google it you'll see there are tonnes of things it can be used for. make sure you still take him to the vet next week though if he still shows any signs of itching, this may just be one symptom of what's wrong. also, since you only just got him you should get him checked out for anything else while you're there. good luck!

the fact that you over bathed here is probally what is causing the dry ichy skin. You have washed away the essential oils in a dogs fur. There is other ways to get rid of fleas than just flea shampoo that would of been a better solution. You need to get a once a month flea treatment from your vet cause chances are the fleas are in the house and shampoo alone will not stop the fleas from jumping back onto her. Good luck

You need to get him on better food. Try adding a tiny bit more to his Iams each day until he's only eating the good food (premium or ultra-premium foods like Blue Buffalo, Innova, Solid Gold, Taste of the Wild...). This changeover should ideally take a week or more. Better food will drastically change your dog's skin and coat.
Meanwhile, yes the egg or olive oil will indeed help his coat. You can also give him fish oil; it'll help his skin and joints too.

You can get shampoos that have aloe or panthenol that will help soothe the itch. Your local pet store (e.i PetSmart, Petco) will have them for under $10.
And yes, as Allison said, improving his diet will definately help improve his coat and skin! :)

it sounds like your dog has mange. it is better that you not touch that area. when my dog had mange my vet prescribed "animex" it is a cream and it worked wonders for my dog.
it is very unlikely that olive oil and eggs will help
