Planes are acceptable if speed is desired, but trains are way cooler as a mode of transportation. Ride in relative comfort, walk around, watch the scenery, catch up on your reading, meals that you don't have to perch on your lap or on a tray table; if you're traveling with a companion, time to chat, curl up and cuddle, get to know one another...

I feel very claustrophobic in cars for some reason; the freedom to stop and look around whenever you want is not too bad, and can lead to some awesome discoveries, but you also run the risk of getting thoroughly lost, running out of gas, getting hit by cattle falling out of the sky, stopping at latter-day Bates Motels, etc...(not to mention that after 3-4 days of continuous road-tripping, the atmosphere in the auto can get pretty tacky)...

Auto. You can go your own pace, and stop and gander at anything you want along the way.
