Should indoctrinating a child in a religion be considered Child Abuse?

I mean, if an Adult wants to follow a religion, no matter how silly it is, then they should be free to do so. They supposedly have made the choice to ignore sense and reason of their own free will.

But a parent, taking an unformed mind and indoctrinating it with fables and fairy tales as if they are real, is surely not allowing that person to develop properly.

Children are not allowed to indulge in other damaging behaviour (such as drinking) until they are old enough to decide for themselves whether they want to or not.

They are not allowed to have sex until they are considered old enough to make a rational decision.

Why should people be allowed to force beliefs onto children before they are able to make up their own minds?

If you know the truth and fail to pass it on to your children, it proves you hate them.

    "O my people, hear my teaching;

listen to the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth in parables,

I will utter hidden things, things from of old-

what we have heard and known,

what our fathers have told us.

    We will not hide them from their children;

we will tell the next generation

the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD,

his power, and the wonders he has done.

    He decreed statutes for Jacob

and established the law in Israel,

    which he commanded our forefathers

    to teach their children,

so the next generation would know them,

even the children yet to be born,

and they in turn would tell their children.

Then they would put their trust in God

and would not forget his deeds

    but would keep his commands.

They would not be like their forefathers—

    a stubborn and rebellious generation,

whose hearts were not loyal to God,

whose spirits were not faithful to him. "

    Psalm 78 :1-8

Yes. People think that they will give a child discipline through religion or something. But they can acquire that without religion. When it comes to the spirit world, there are many/many unpinned down questions. All you have to do is research the history of all these relegions and you will be impressed. It's ancient astro theology and it's provable. And the very senior people who run all the major relegions of the world actually say this. That's why it's called the greatest story ever told. It's just a story. The real truth you have to dig deep for, they don't give it through the ignorant masses relegions. So, mind control; in any form destroys a lot of independent questioning and confidence too. This turns out to be bad for the world. We've had many abuse and war problems over religion through history.

The children I know from my area of the world DO drink alcohol and indulge in sex, long before they can make a "rational decision" [emotional maturity]. I am a Christian, I have a son and I never "indoctrinated him" although I took him to church with me while he was younger. He does not attend church anymore and I am fine with that decision. God is love and love does give us all a choice - so why would I not, give my, own, son one?

Child abuse is not teaching your child anything that is right and proper AND that God is there for him or her, in spite of what they are not.

And when do you start to mould them? I'll give you some verses and wish you read them.

The word of God is this: 2TIMOTHY 3:16 = All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for refroof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

17 = That the man of God may be perfect thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

MATTHEW 19:14 =But Jesus said, Suffer little children and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

PROVERB 22:6 = Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

The wat where he should go:

JEREMIAH 6:16 =Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls,.....

All we have to do is to find this religion: although there are huge number of religion existed, you will know the one that God established by himself through the preacher.

JOHN 7:17 = If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

DEUTERONOMY 31:12 = Gather the people together, men and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within the gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law.

13 = And that their children, which have not known anything, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God,.....

We parents are the hope of our children. And through my source you will find the preacher that can teach all the scripture.

What you are quoting about drinking and sexual behaviour has nothing to do with religion only with common sense and good parenting as children are unable to know what is wrong with these two things until the damage is done and not able to be undone.

It is a form of child abuse to send children to faith schools as this does not allow them free choice in a religious sense and can intrude on other areas of a young life in ways that are not good.

A good parent guides their child to make the right decisions for themselves without resorting to religion as a ruler.

Same reason I get to teach, not force, my child how to act a decent human being, including such things like not having sex until he is old enough or drink. I also have well developed apologetics to back up my belief. In my opinion, it would be considered child abuse to leave a child floundering without faith.

who do you suggest should control a child's mind?

    another relative?

    their teacher?

    their friends?

    neighbors?

    tv?

    internet?

    strangers?

    the government?

    a preacher? which religion?

it is a moral responsibility and a very fundamental one, that the parents of a child provide him/her with the means to grow up in the best possible way. materially, spiritually, morally.

is it a crime then, a parent of a certain faith to instruct their child in this same faith? if they chose a different faith, which one should they choose? don't they think, their faith is the correct one?

parents are the ones that have the best interests of their children in mind. they are the ones that make the effort, the sacrifices. they have the responsibility for their children's actions.

this idea flying about, that parents should not influence their children, serves the purposes of those who wish that THEY would instead.

As those who do not believe can not enter the Kingdom of God, to not teach them of the ways of our religion means they have no chance of salvation

Also how is it child abuse, alcohol will damage a child development while sexual abuse will cause STD, emotional damage and unwanted pregnancy.

Would you consider imposing you moral standards of a child abuse (although some parents consider it abuse already)? Why don't you allow them to grow up and decide whats right and wrong for themselves, see how quickly society will decay

Your answer smells like something called communism, parents not an atheist government who controls everything should decide how to raise their children

WHO THE DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TRYING TO TELL US HOW TO RAISE OUR CHILDREN?

Our children aren't murderers, rapists, stalkers or thieves, they believe in a God but you obviously think thats worse

I'll actually think I'll allow Ke$ha and Eminem to instill my kids moral values

You have an incredible biased view on the matter. Calling religion a set of fairy tails and myths is'nt looking at it from both sides. And if you were raising a child and told them thats what it was... well thats hardly letting them decide for themselves is it.

Atheists really do throw words like "indoctrination" around. I don't see how teaching children about God, their souls and how they fit into this world as damaging - in fact it leads to eternal paradise. Why withhold that from a child?

China is known for human rights abuses and as far as I know the govt won't let kids go to church.

On one hand you're against good people teaching good but not against bad people teaching bad.

    Think about this.

So, should we not mention Santa Clause until they are 18 (or 21), the age when they can decide whether to believe in Santa or not?
