What kind of car seat did you buy for your baby?

My wife and I are having our first child. We need a car seat. What kind of car seat did you use? Would you get that one again? Why? Would you recommend a car seat that is stroller compatible? Or do you think that having a separate stroller is the way to go?

I have an Evenflo Aura Oh system and I hate it. Especially the car seat, so I do not recommend that one. I also have Graco MyRide 65, which is a convertible car seat. You can use it with newborns, rear-facing up to 40 lbs and forward-facing up to 65. I would highly recommend:

This is the system I have (stay away!):

First baby, we went with a standard Graco Snugride travel system with a stroller. The stroller was terrible, the car seat only went to 20lbs and wasn't comfortable, and while it was convenient to be able to take it in and out of the house we had to put things under the seat to get it at the right angle for a baby. So this time I did a lot more research and decided that for us the Graco Snugride 35 is what we'll be going with. It still removes from the base so you can take it in and out of the house, but it lasts to 35lbs (so it should last all babies until they're a year old at least) and it has an adjustable base so I can make sure that it is at the right angle without having anything wedged under it. The other car seats I considered were the Britax infant carrier, Chicco infant seats, and the Baby Trend infant seat. Baby Trend is almost what we went with except the buckle seemed hard to deal with.

I do not recommend buying a car seat and stroller together. First a car seat should only be used for car transportation, not for sleeping, strolling, feeding, etc. The reason is because the incline a car seat puts a baby at, as well as the curve, can really impede breathing to the point where some infants have died from oxygen problems. Until they're 3-6 months old a baby should be flat on their back or carried by their parents as much as possible, not kept in a slightly inclined position (unless they have reflux problems and even then you don't incline them more than 30 degrees. Car seats incline to 45 usually.) So there's no reason to get a car seat and stroller together.

Second, I feel like you get stuck with a stroller that isn't the best when you are buying something that comes together in a unit like that. Like the Chicco stroller lays fully flat, is a really nice one, has great under-carriage features... but I like the Graco Snugride 35 better than the Chicco car seat. So why should I be stuck with one and not the other? Or if I want a Graco Snugride 35 and a Graco Quatro Tour stroller (again, very nice) but the Quatro comes with the Snugride 32 or a color I don't like, then why get it? And then there's other options, like what we're planning on doing. We're planning on carrying the newborn for the first 2 months, then he can ride in our Baby Trend jogging stroller (at full incline and walking not running) without danger. The Baby Trend car seats have a weird seat belt buckle that is pretty annoying, and the jogger we have I got on sale more than a year ago. Why get a new stroller that I may not like?

First of all, welcome to North America!! Not sure if you are moving to USA or Canada (I am living in Canada). Both countries have different regulations in car seat installing and age/weight requirements for when baby outgrows the car seat, so keep this in mind. What I mean by this is that regardless of car seat brand, both countries have regulations (by law) about how the car seat should be facing and the age when your baby can finally NOT be in a car seat (this rule applies when he/she gets to a certain age/weight). Anyways, my brand of car seat is GRACO. We are satisfied with it. Car seats (depending on brand name) can range from $80.00 to about $200.00. There is Graco brand, Evenflo brand, Eddie Bauer brand, Safety First brand, and the list goes on. Most parent I see using the GRACO brand. Hope this helps!

We had the Gracco car seat and stroller system with both of our kids and I loved it.

I have and would recommend getting the Graco Snugride. It's easy to use, comfortable for babies, has great features and excellent reviews! And yes, I would recommend a compatible stroller, but it's definitely not necessary. You can go either way and it's pretty easy!

    Here's the stroller: http://www.amazon.com/Graco-SnugRider-Infant-Strol...

    (that also has excellent reviews!)

I think it's a Graco Stroller/carseat combo, but that's not the point I want to make here. Whatever you decide on just check for recalls regularly. The point I do want to make is this: I have a 3 month old and I do NOT carry her around in her carseat bouncing her off of my knee, which seems to be a common thing these days. Babies are meant to be carried in our arms. Carseats are meant to keep the child safe in a car, not to carry them around everywhere we go! That really bothers me! How is the baby supposed to feel loved and safe if we never hold them in our arms. They just want to be close to us!

I use the Maxi Cosi with Isofix base with the Quinny base.

Really easy to click in the car and onto the pram base.
