What does "payment is due at the time service is rendered" mean?

...in reference to a surgical procedure. I know simply put it means "you're serviced now, you pay now." But does it literally mean I would have to pay that day? Will a bill be mailed to me? Is a payment in full expected or can I send payments? And finally, what happens if I don't pay the bill right away? Does the bill accumulate or will it wait around until I get to it?

Sorry, I'm completely unexperienced when it comes to this stuff. :] Also I do not have insurance.

Update:

Ohh no way, really Pat? It's a Sunday thought, thanks. I obviously just wanted an answer to settle some questions for today. I know that I can call Monday.

Your interpretation "you pay now" is correct. They'll expect payment in full the day of the surgery, when you check in, before the surgery is performed. If you don't pay them, they'll cancel the surgery.

People thinking they'll just wait around for the money until you get to it, like you suggested, are the reason they insist on prepayment.

If you talk to them ahead of time, they might agree to set up a payment plan - or they might not. If it's critically needed surgery they might work something out, but if it's elective they very likely won't.

It means they want paid the day of the service. You need to ask them if they will accept payments. Otherwise they expect you to have cash, check or credit card and may want to know up front that you have that with you.
