Making cable networks settings a static ip?
Im trying to play an online game but to play i have to forward the ports that the game uses. Which means i have to use a static ip address for my router.
I already made my local area connection static. and i logged into my netgear router (192.168.0.1) and tried to make that static using the same ip that i did for the local area connection. But once i pressed apply i no longer could connect to the internet. I called my internet provider and asked what DNS server i should use and they told me. but still doesn't let me connect to internet when i try to make my router static
am i doin something wrong?
I ran cmd and then typed ipconfig /all and wrote all that in the box that says Use following ip:

The router's IP you do not touch, it is your PC's IP address that has to be set to static for port forwarding. The router's WAN settings are controlled by the ISP - you do not change that, and the router stays where it is, at 192.168.0.1 - always.
Since you are at 192.168.0.1, write all the information from your PC when you do the ipconfig command, like the DNS addresses, default gateway, netmask. Then, go into the network adapter settings of your computer, and change it to "manual" TCP/IP configuration. Try using 192.186.0.2 as the computer's address, and enter all the rest of the parameters that were written down. This assumes your DHCP settings on the router do NOT include 192.168.0.2. If so, pick another IP address that is not used by the DHCP pool on the router.
Then, reboot the PC, make sure you can connect to the internet ok. Only then, go back into the router and port forward to your PC's IP address
