Should health insurance cover all expenses, or just catastrophic ones?
Home insurance covers big events, like fires, theft, etc. It doesn't cover replacing every light bulb. Shouldn't health insurance be the same way?

Good point, insurance should only cover catastrophic events.
How high would your home owners insurance be if you filed a claim everytime you replaced a light bulb? You replaced a leaky pipe? It would be comparable to health insurance, this is one of the major factors influencing the cost. There is no personal responsibility in taking on expense for events i.e. flu shots, prescriptions and items under $500 . This would go a long way to reduce the cost of health insurance, one remedy that the conservatives had but the democrats ignored....higher deductibles.

That's what deductions and co pays are for in health coverage. Catastrophic care is something that is out of the ordinary, and in health care the ordinary can be quite expensive.
When a visit to a doctor can be three hundred dollars and tests easily add up to thousands more, you can quickly see the problem.
A day in most hospitals, for just a bed is over a thousand. So an ordinary outpatient minor operation can easily run four thousand between paying for the use of the OR, the doctors, the tests and any anesthetics and the anesthesiologist. Say you have couple of kids who need tonsillectomies and you have a huge bill.
And by no means is that catastrophic. The long term chronic conditions, the cancers, the diabetic care, and the bills if they can't control it are both catastrophic and perfectly ordinary.
The difference between home insurance and health insurance is that I don't need to replace my jewelry immediately, or I can take the settlement and put off the purchase of a replacement or buy less expensive jewels. I have no choice when it comes to my body, it has to be cured or I die or at the very least live in extreme discomfort.
The funny thing here is that, very much like health insurance, you don't realize how little you are covered for until you need it, then you find out that you are basically paying for fire insurance, it only covers some things and not others, and the company that was so wonderful before you needed them, doesn't return calls, or puts off the checks needed for the contractors. Or just refuses you.
After a house fire in my last home, I decided that if I ever had another reason to file a claim, I'd throw myself into the fire first. It was that bad.

I don't know.
Is pregnancy a catastrophic event?
Breaking a leg?
What about immunizations? (cos those bad boys are EXPENSIVE)
Follow up for diseases like diabetes, congestive heart failure etc?
Would kidney dialysis be considered catastrophic?
No health insurance should not be like home owners instance. The 2 are very different. One deals with an inanimate object, the other with human lives.

There are extreme deductible plans that furnish a kinfolk deductible of in a lot of circumstances 5,000 to eight,000 a year. they don't kick in until eventually you've spent that a lot. they are critically more cost-effective than classic plans and many also qualify for an well being reductions Account the position you may have pretax funds deposited to spend on those out of pocket prices. you want to substantiate in case you could arise with the money for to come back up with the deductible volume in accordance to annum notwithstanding. We had this kind of plans until eventually we had to take my daughter to to ER for an harm and ended up paying each and every thing because of our deductible. So, we wanting to pass ahead and dad for the classic coverage now because i'd really spend the more beneficial in charges each and every 2 weeks than ought to come back up with $5,000 suddenly.

Exactly! What we have is insurance at all, you 're simply making payment before you use the service. I think it would be better to compare it to people complaining the their car insurance doesn't cover an oil change or other maintenance

Why can't we have a variety of plans? Like car insurance. You can often choose to add and remove several features and coverages.

We the people should be able to choose freely what we want covered and what we're willing to pay for it. Not the damn liberals.
