A good example of legacy system in terms of vehicles are "Vintage cars".

Vintage cars are old vehicles that is (for some reason/purpose is) still being used though we already have new/advanced models already.

In my experience, the term "legacy systems" generally refers to older software systems within the business. These are most likely home grown, but could refer to older 3rd party or custom implementations. Here is a decent quick summary as well http://financecareers.about.com/od/informationtech...

As for what they do, that is a huge range and generally depends on the company - Banks will obviously have many systems that handle checks, credit cards & other financial transactions, but they also likely have hr, payroll, general ledger, accounts payable & budgeting systems - any of these could be a legacy system.

    Hope this helps.
