Johnson outboard motor repair (Water Pump)?

I have a 1995 Johnson 88 Outboard. It needs a water pump. I have everything loose except the shift rod that goes all the way through the unit How is it connected and how do I disconnect it?

Thanks for your answers.

Update:

texas.....Thanks for your answers. However, I cannot find a screw as described. I've removed the key to the shift lever and the lever slides out about an inch or so, but won't release the rod. Can you give a better description for the screw's location. Thanks

I'm assuming you mean the impeller, as there isn't really much more to an outboard water pump than this part - other than the little housing enclosing it. And its always best to just ask the dealer's engineer vis-a-vis your model when you purchase the replacement part. I did - and my Honda 15hp 4 Stroke is still under warranty! (I just said it was far too far to trail it to them, which it was, so they told me!):

    *Select neutral.

*Release pressure on gearshift linkage (looks like the heads of two hexagon-head bolts head-to-head) halfway down the leg: Hold top (long) hexagon head still while turning lower (normal) hexagon head clockwise - down.

*Release five bolts / m/c screws securing gearbox (the part with the propellor & shaft in it) to leg.

*Remove gearbox / disengage shaft and pump hose.

*Remove impeller housing (4 screws) located around drive-shaft on top of gearbox, and old impeller (don't drop the little key!)

*Locate new impeller with key, on keyed shaft. Replace housing over new impeller while holding by hand and rotate shaft in clockwise direction (looking down) to set impeller paddles.

*Resecure impeller housing (4 screws) and retrace above steps: (Re-engage shaft in splines and connect pump hose, relocate gearbox and m/c screws - tighten to just a little over finger-tight, they are as soft as cheese! Hold the top hexagonal (long) gearshift linkage still while turning the lower one anti-clockwise - up).

[Note, while your assembly is off, blow through the pump hose to ensure there are no blockages].

Sounds really heavy! But I did it all in fifteen minutes at the top of the slip with the engine on the boat. If your unit is small enough to remove from the vessel then you needn't even get the boat out. Put a piece of 2"x4" timber in the vice and clamp the engine to it.

But remember to ask the dealer engineer for your engine model's specific procedure when you purchase the new part, and write the steps down on an envelope! They almost certainly won't differ greatly from this. My impeller cost about £10 [$14] and what took me - a novice - 15 minutes very cautiously, they used to bill me 1 hour's labour for (£35 + part = £45!!!) [= $65!]

    Good luck.

Look under the bottom carb, from the port side of the powerhead, for a 7/16" hex head screw. The piece that is held in place by that screw (the "shift rod lever") has a pin that's holding the shift rod. Loosen the screw (without removing it) and pull the shift rod lever towards you to release it.

    you bet...

    go to http://shop.evinrude.com/

    click on "electronic parts catalogue"

select "Johnson" in the dropdown box upper left hand corrner

    click on "1995"

    click on "88"

click on your model number (or any model #, all 3 have the same gearcase)

    click on "cylinder & crankcase"

the screw you're looking for is part #47 on that chart

i think its a 3/8 screw looking from the back of the motor it will be on your port side under the carb....don't forget to lock your water pump.....

some come apart on top of the gearcase somewhere
