What does it mean "Visualized IVC and portal vein appear patent."?

Just got a report on ultrasound and it said this. I don't know what patent means in this context.

    IVC = inferior vena cava, one of the great vessels of the heart that carries deoxygenated ('used' blood) from the lower part of the body to the heart).

    Portal vein = a blood vessel that carries blood from the liver.

    Patent = open.

    So 'patent portal vein' = the portal vein is open, ie blood is flowing through it.

    They mean a week from tomorrow. If they meant tomorrow, today being Thursday - and that is understood by all concerned - they should say "tomorrow," and not "Friday." To say that would be correct if it were only Wednesday, for example.
