What can cause Ford OBD 1 codes 41 and 42?

I have a 1989 ford ranger with a 2.9L EFI engine. I have been having weird issues such as smelling gas at start up and having to feather the gas peddle to get it to start and a semi rough idol. I ran a code scan of the engine and i got KOER code 41 HEGO sensor circuit indicates engine running lean. I cleared the code then waited a day and scanned again and it then gave me code 42 HEGO sensor circuit indicates engine running rich.My haynes manual has been less then help full in helping me diagnose this and im wondering what could possibly cause both of those codes.

Your HEGO (heated oxygen sensor) is only reporting what it is seeing. The computer is having a hard time maintaining proper air/fuel ratio. 1st check fuel pressure. Make sure it's correct, might have a fuel pressure regulator going out. Also check coolant sensor to make sure it's reporting accurate data to the computer. It acts like the choke for cold start up and if you are running rich at cold start up then coolant sensor might be at fault. They often don't trip a code when they fail. Hope that info helps.
