    Prejudice and racism - Tom Robinson was convicted simply due to the fact he was black.

    The white jury would rather believe that a black man raped and beat up Mayella, than that her father did.

    However, there are also racist black people in the book - Lula, at the church.

    well Atticus gave the jury reasonable doubt that Tom Robinson was not guilty and he was still found guilty, the jury pool consisted of only male white men, people grew angry that Atticus was really going to try and defend him, it was considered wrong that Tom felt sorry for Mayella

    When he was put on trial simply because a white woman accused him of a crime as opposed to actual physical evidence that any crime was committed.
