LOST Finale......Confused Here!?

Okay, I watched the final episode of LOST. I know the entire show was open to interpretation but the final scene had me confused! Yeah I know they were all dead and they all joined one another before "moving on" but did they all die in the original plane crash and was the Island just a Limbo for everyone? And what the hell was with the plane flying over head before Jack dies?

All of the answers were in Christians speech to Jack at the end. He told Jack that the most important time of his "LIFE" was spent with those people. Meaning that all of the things that happened on the island were real life. The purgatory was the flash sideways, a world created for them to exist until they could cross over. The plane flying overhead was Lapidus leaving the island with richard, miles, sawyer, kate and claire. Christian told jack that everyone died at different times, so lapidus may have made it back to LAX and those people lived out their lives. Christian said that there is no "NOW" which means purgatory can be a nanosecond or it can be a very long time. It took Jack however long to finally be ready to cross over - all those people in the church had died at sometime in their lives and they were ready to cross over as well. Some people werent ready to cross yet and they were not in the church (or they arent dead yet)

To put it simply, everything that happened on the Island was real.

The alternate timeline was a limbo, so that everybody could re-unite and move on together

Everybody is dead, they all died at different times, but time doesn't matter.

That plane is the one that Lupidus, Miles, Richard, Claire, Kate and Sawyer were on,

Valena has it right on. Everyone died when they died, time is is not relevant or real. Jack died, Vincent found him, and it is likely Rose and Bernard found him there, got together with Hurley and Ben, and buried him before living out their lives. Hurley eventually found a replacement, it could have been 2000 or more years later before he died and the last ten minutes took place, but as I said, time is not real. The show combines not only all religions, but science, which is actually a religion for some.

The island was the birth of creation, long before Jacob and MIB. And it was real in the sense it existed in between worlds, the earthly world and the next. And they all waited for their "leader", Jack, to move on together.

My interpretation - and that's all it is - is that the sideways flashes from season 6 was what Jack imagined as he he lay dying - that all his friends were happy at last.

As far as I can understand, weird as it was, the island was real and the plane at the end was the plane that Lapidus was flying off Hydra Island.

Although I am wondering how it didn't blow up considering it was choc full of C4....

Your proverbial heart? Or, your physical heart? The answer, of course depends not on which heart you mean, but which mind you mean? Referring to the phrase, "he's lost his mind" we can gather that if you did lose your proverbial heart, you could only lose your 'mind' as in, your sanity, depending on what choices you chose thereafter. With the mind as in the 'ego' the thought processes that sometimes control us, if you lost your proverbial heart , you would more than likely lose your mind as it was because then you wouldn't function as a typical human anymore. You'd become robotic, lacking empathy, compassion and other human traits that influence the mind and make you human. You would become a machine, and their minds are something completely different. The question would become, what would be the driving force of your new state of mind? What would influence your decisions? If you meant losing your actual, physical heart... well, then I would say yes and no to losing your mind, any mind. Yes, because you would be dead. Your body as you knew it would no longer be functioning on any level, and therefore be without mind. No, because it is said the 'mind' never dies, but overlaps from reincarnation to reincarnation, which explains why we carry some habits and memories through, often being perceived as genetics, dream states or deja vu. Although it is actually your spirit or soul that is doing the reincarnating, the soul comes from the one soul that inhabits everything, and so your 'mind' that learns more with every reincarnation is actually your very individualism. Without it, you are not you.

When I watched it, I saw the plane as Oceanic 815. Never even occured to me it might be the Ajira flight with Sawyer, Richard, etc. I think it's up to interpretation. To me, Jack has a big smile on his face cuz seeing 815 flying by the island meant he 'fixed' things, and therefore allowing the start of the sideways/purgatory world as he died.

I think there are few good answers here that while they explain things out fairly well, still don't leave me feeling any less ripped off. We thought they were dead or the island was purgatory for a while. Just b/c it's the sideways that were doesn't make it feel any less predictable

The plane was the one that Sawyer, Kate and the other people were on. That's the only thing I have an answer for. Haha.
