Did Abu Bakr lead the Prayers while the Prophet(p) was ill?

Prophet (pbuh) during his (pbuh) illness was used to come to the mosque time and again, and kept on leading the prayer till his illness so much intensified that He (pbuh) had to stop this continuation. So in one morning when after the call of prayer of morning, Bilal (ra) approached Prophet (pbuh) and asked him (pbuh) to lead the prayer, He (pbuh) said “I do not find myself strong enough to go to mosque today, so ask someone else to lead the prayer today”. Hazrat Aysha said “Order my father Abu bakr to lead the prayer”. Hazrat Hafsa said “Order my father Umer bin Khatab to lead the prayer”. When Prophet (pbuh) heard the names of Abu Bakr and Umer and came to know that they had not gone with the army of Usama bin Zaid, He (pbuh) in spite of so much illness stood up at once and moved to the mosque. He (pbuh) took the support of Ali (as) and Fazal bin Abbas and reached to “Mehraab of Masjid”. Abu Bakr had reached to “Mehraab of Masjid”. You (pbuh) signaled him to leave the place and lead the prayer himself (pbuh). The incident was as such but our Sunni fellows say that Abu Bakar lead the prayer and try to prove that Abu Bakr deserved Caliphate as He lead the prayer during the illness of Prophet (pbuh).

Some Sunni Reports on the Incident and their Critical Analysis:

There is much contradiction among historical reports on this incident and those contradictions are so prominent that we cannot consider them true reports. Because one report says a thing while other report says some different thing in contradiction to first report. Amazing thing is that most of these self contradictory reports are from Hazrat Aysha. The contradictions among these reports is enough to disprove their claim and also that these reports are against the basic principles of prayer even.

First Report: Bilal (ra) asked Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) to lead the prayer then Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) said Abdullah bin Zuma to ask someone else to offer the prayer. Abdullah says that I came out and saw that Umer is there but not Abu baker. I asked Umer to lead the prayer. When Umer raised his sound while saying “Takbeer”, Prophet (pbuh), on hearing his sound asked “Where is Abu Bakr? Allah and muslims do not want that Umer lead the prayer”. Then Prophet (pbuh) sent a man to call Abu Bakr but Abu bakr came when Umer had finished the prayer. Then Abu Bakar led the prayer to people

(Seerat Ibn-e-Hashaam Vol 2 Page 302)

MY COMMENTS: This report shows that in the beginning Prophet (pbuh) did not nominate any person to lead the prayer and left this on Abdullah to ask any one to lead the prayer. On the basis of this general permission Abdullah asked Umer to lead the prayer and when Umer started the prayer then Prophet (pbuh) called Abu bakr to lead the prayer. But before the arrival of Abu Bakr, Umer had finished the prayer.Abu Bakr lead the prayer again to the people.

(I)Is it not surprising that when Prophet (pbuh) had given general permission to Abdullah to ask any one to lead the prayer and Umer led the prayer then why Abu Bakar was called to lead the prayer? Was prayer behind Umer was not right?

(II)If it was right then why prayer was repeated?

(III)If Prophet (pbuh) wished that Abu Bakr lead the prayer then why He (pbuh) did not directed Abdullah that He only ask Abu Bakar to lead the prayer? In this way neither Umer would not have been insulted nor would have been need or repetition of prayer.

Second Report: When Umer said the “Takbeer” then Prophet (pbuh) No, No! Where is Ibn e Abi Qahafa? On this all the rows disbursed and Umer left the prayer. Reporter says that we were still on our places when Abu Bakar returned from “Saah” and He led the prayer to us. Tabqat Ibn e Saad Vol 2 Page 222

MY COMMENTS: Let us see the contradictions.

(I) First report was that a man was sent behind Abu Bakar to call him while this report says that He came himself there.

(II) First report was that Abu Bakar reached after Umer had finished the prayer while this report says that He came during the prayer.

(III) First report was that prayer was repeated while this report says that first prayer was broken/discontinued and again prayer was started. In addition to this contradiction there is one more problem in this report that Why was prayer broken/discontinued? If we consider that Imam was “fasiq” or unjust then before one group there is no condition of Imam being just for leading the prayer. And before those Imam must be Just the ruling is that if during the prayer the people came to know that Imam is unjust then instead of breaking the prayer, they should offer the prayer with the “Niyat” of “Faradi”(alone).

Even If he did it doesn't prove that Prophet(pbuh) made Abu Bakr his successor.

If Prophet(pbuh) made it clear that Abu Bakr will be the successor then why was there a saqifa? Why did the Ansar disagreed with Abu Bakr?

Narrated Ibn Abbass: .....And no doubt after the death of the Prophet we were informed that the Ansar disagreed with us and gathered in the shed of Bani Sa'da. 'Ali and Zubair and whoever was with them, opposed us, while the emigrants gathered with Abu Bakr.........

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 82, Hadith 817

We have on the authority of Ibn Umar saying that his father Umar on his dead bed said "If I would appoint my successor, (I would because) one better than me did so. (He meant Abu Bakr.) If I would leave You alone, (I would do so because) one better than me, i. e. the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him), did so.

I don't know why sunnis do taqiya? was there any doubt that Ali(as) was going to be the first Caliph of Ummah?

Aswad b. Yazid reported: It was mentioned before A'isha that will had been made (by the Holy Prophet) in favour of 'Ali (as the Prophet's first caliph), whereupon she said: When did he make will in his favour? I had been providing support to him (to the Holy Prophet) with my chest (or with my lap). He asked for a tray, when he fell in my lap (relaxing his body), and I did not realise that he had breathed his last. When did he make any will in his ('Ali's) favour?

For me there is no such thing as Sunnism or Shiaism, I just call myself a Muslim and anyone who says, if asked, that he is a Shia or a Sunni then that person is going against the teaching of Islam.

    The Glorious Quran says:

    "As for those who divide

    Their religion and break up

    Into sects, thou hast

No part in them in the least:

    Their affair is with Allah:

    He will in the end

    Tell them the truth

    Of all that they did."

    [Al-Quran 6:159]

In this verse Allah (swt) says that one should disassociate oneself from those who divide their religion and break it up into sects. But when one asks a Muslim, "who are you?", the common answer is either ‘I am a Sunni, or ‘I am a Shia’.

    Our Prophet was a Muslim

One may ask such Muslims, "Who was our beloved prophet (pbuh)? Was he a Hanafi or a Shafi, or a Humbali or a Maliki?" No! He was a Muslim, like all the other prophets and messengers of Allah before him. It is mentioned in chapter 3 verse 52 of Al-Qur’an that Jesus (pbuh) was a Muslim. Further, in chapter 3 verse 67, Al-Qur’an says that Ibrahim (pbuh) was not a Jew or a Christian but was a Muslim

If anyone poses a Muslim the question who are you, he should say "I am a MUSLIM, not a shafi or a hanafi". Surah Fussilat chapter 41 verse 33 says:

    "Who is better in speech

    Than one who calls (men)

    To Allah, works righteousness,

And says, ‘I am of those

Who bow in Islam (Muslim)?’ "

    [Al-Qur’an 41:33]

The Qur’an says "Say I am of those who bow in Islam". In other words, say, "I am a Muslim".

    b. The Prophet (pbuh) dictated letters to non-Muslim kings and rulers inviting them to accept Islam. In these letters he mentioned the verse of the Qur’an from Surah Ali Imran chapter 3 verse 64:

    Say ye: "Bear witness

    That we (at least)

    Are Muslims (bowing

    To Allah’s Will).

    [Al-Qur’an 3:64]

According to Tirmidhi Hadith No. 171, the prophet (pbuh) is reported to have said, "My Ummah will be fragmented into seventy-three sects, and all of them will be in Hell fire except one sect." The companions asked Allah’s messenger which group that would be. Where upon he replied, "It is the one to which I and my companions belong."

My opinion? I put my trust in Allah. He is all-Encompassing and Knowing, and there is no way for me to refute that. "... And Allah gives His sovereignty to whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing [in favor] and Knowing." (Quran 2:247) The first Caliph was Abu Bakr, don't you think it was Allah who gave him the position? Remember, He gives sovereignty to whom He wills.

We believe this to be a lie because the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said that only Imam Ali (as) was legally qualified to act in his stead. In other words, whenever the Holy Prophet (pbuh) is not physically available to perform any of his roles, either we wait for him to return or let Imam Ali (as) do it. NO ONE ELSE COULD ACT IN THE STEAD OF ALLAH'S APOSTLE.

    Shaykh al-Albani records in his Kitab al-Sunnah, p. 550:

علي مني وأنا من علي ولا يؤدي عني إلا أنا أو علي

Ali is from me and I am from him, and no one can act in my stead save myself or Ali.

    Al-Albani says:

    إسناده صحيح،

    Its chain is sahih.

Shias must have created all contradictory stories. They are the creators of fitnah in Ummah.

We (Sunni) dont accept Ali as Imam because he killed our brother at khaber

Otherwise we (Sunnis) know that Ali is true imam
