Laptop shuts down for no apparent reason?

My laptop shuts down without warning, sometimes before I open mail or explorer, sometimes after 5 minutes. I run Vista, no viruses show up after a thorough scan, the only "new" programme I have installed is an Adobe Flash player update. There is plenty of memory available. I have gone into the repair mode (F8) but it shows nothing, does anyone have any ideas? I am running it on Wifi, my PC works fine which I assume eliminates the router. This is a very recent problem and I have no new electrical goods near the laptop which could affect the performance. It is impossible to even read mail in normal mode. If you have suggestions please could you explain in fairly basic terms. Thanks for reading this

Update:

Thank you for replying so quickly. The laptop is nearly 3 years old and I always use it on a hard surace. I have taken off the bottom and removed the battery to ensure it´s clean. There wasn´t very much dirt at all (much to my surprise) but it was very hot. I am now running in normal mode so hopefully this is the cause of the problem. I really appreciate you both trying to help me, i I´m back on here in 10 minutes you know it´s switched off again!

You are running Vista, so that indicates that your [unknown make and model] laptop could be a few years old. That indicates that your issue COULD be one of overheating, if you have never cleaned the cooling channel out before. You see, the fan on the bottom of the laptop (that needs to be clear, so never use it on a sift surface) sucks up dirt, dust, hair as well as air. This material gathers on the leading edges of the cooling fins inside the laptop, and eventually forms a matt, similar to felt. This blocks air flow, and causes the laptop to run hot, and eventually turn off on it's own.

    end of line

Maybe your laptop is overheating, try and put it on a hardback book or on a wooden table o see if this works because it will not get hot enough to cut out my laptop used to do it all the time
