It is most likely that some of the files that are essential for windows to start have become corrupted. There are a few ways to fix it, but first i'm sure you want to save all of your data.

*****If you're not comfortable trying to do this yourself then take it to a certified technician. your data may not be able to be recovered if the hard drive has sustained PHYSICAL damage. DO NOT let them tell you that your data is unrecoverable unless they say that your hard drive is damaged. in this case you will need a new hard drive and they will have to install a fresh copy of windows.*****

Since windows will not boot and the procedures to fix this problem may or may not require you to delete everything on your hard drive, we must do one of two things to save your data. you can either:

    1) take your hard drive out of your computer and install it into a computer that you know is working properly and save everything you need to an external drive or disk.

    OR

    2) download a bootable operating system such as Ubuntu onto a disk and boot your disabled system with it which will allow you to save all of your data to an external drive.

Both of these options have alot of steps involved. too many to type here. If you want to try these yourself then these links will show you how. I recommend Creating the Ubuntu live cd. Taking a hard drive from a laptop and putting in a desktop may require equipment that you dont have. Ubuntu is free and all you need is a cd to put it on and free cd burning software.

    Create Ubuntu Live CD: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

OK. Once you have your data backed up you can then proceed to troubleshooting your windows error. For this, you need one of two things. either your handy dandy windows setup/recovery discs or a Hidden Recovery Partition that you laptop may or may not have come with.

Preferably, you will want to use the windows discs because with these you may be able to just fix the problem causing the boot error. The hidden partition will restore your laptop to its original factory settings like it was when you first bought it. this should be the last resort unless you don't care if anything gets deleted then do this first. your Windows recovery disc was probably included with your laptop when you bought it. if it wasnt or it has been misplaced, you can contact HP support and they will send you new discs.

To use your Windows Recovery/setup disc you must ensure that your computer is set to boot from the disc drive before the hard drive. This link will tell you how. http://www.hiren.info/pages/bios-boot-cdrom

Once you have the BIOS setup correctly, insert your windows recovery disc into the cd rom drive and restart your computer. You will see a message that says "Press any key to boot from CD..." once you do that, a blue screen will com up. DO NOT press F2 or F6 while windows is loading everything. Once it is done you will have a few options to choose from to fix your problem. These links will guide you to resolving the issue. Try each one then reboot and see if it has fixed the problem. if not, move to the next one.

    Run Chkdsk /r http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

    Run Fixboot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

    Run Fixmbr http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

    Fix the registry http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

    Run a Repair installation http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsu...

If none of these work you will have to Reinstall Windows Entirely. You can do this using your Windows Discs or from the Hidden Recovery Partition if your laptop has one.

To access your Hidden Recovery Partition and set your computer back to its factory form follow this link. http://www.ehow.com/how_4814366_boot-hp-recovery-p...

Once Windows has been reinstalled, you will then need to download and install all the updates for it. If you used the discs for the reinstall then you may also need to install the drivers for the laptop's hardware to function. these can be downloaded here: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support_task.h...

I know this may be overwhelming if you've never done anything like this before, but that is why there are IT people out there to assist you. I hope this helps. Good luck.

First, try removing the HDD and fetch a bootable DVD and try booting from that. If it works fine its your HDD. Try formatting it and if it dosn't get through purchase a new one. Second, try removing the battery and use the wall charger to boot, cause sometimes the minor voltage difference will be detected and it wont let you use the laptop. Third, try resetting the BIOS setting. Hope that you have disconnected all peripherals. Main source of blue screens(BSOD) on Windows PCs are virus and some kind of static energy in the motherboard. Dont forget to connect the HDD and backup your data before you format it.

It sounds like it is dead - did you install new hardware, new software, or made other changes?

Do you have the original Vista disk? If yes, time for the repair install:
