The song he co-wrote with Patti Smith "Because the Night(Belongs to Lovers)" I think that her gestures are a little too theatrical for me. It's a great song but seeing her perform it is a little over the top. She was never the best looking woman to me and now that she is older she looks like a witch on stage and the hands all over the place flaying. It's like "put you arms down by your sides and just sing the damned song."

Other than Stevie Nicks, I would say that Patti Smith is right up there as one of the top gesture queens. Hands all over the place. It's like sign language with the gestures. Every word and syllable has a different gesture. I live in Boston and we have witches in Salem that read people's fortunes and have the Black Mass. They get like this with the gestures and the incantations. They are totally serious but you have to wonder if it's all just a put on. So I was on You Tube and I caught a glimpse of Patti Smith on stage singing this song. Dressed completely in black. Long hair in her face. And she is no longer a young woman. So here is this old hag, dressed in black, with the hands putting punctuation marks on every utterance. Be-cause-the-night-be-longs-to-lov-ers! So that is nine different arm/hand movements. It's almost comical. It's like a vaudeville act or something you'd see in a road show with the old fashioned circus acts.
