need synonyms for my story?

I'm writing a book about a shape-shifter, and I feel like I'm using the words 'morphed' and 'changed' too much. Any ideas?

Also, I need synonyms for 'asked' and 'said'.

thanks in advance XD

From Elmore Leonard's 10 Rules of Writing:

"Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue. The line of dialogue belongs to the character; the verb is the writer sticking his nose in. But "said" is far less intrusive than "grumbled", "gasped", "cautioned", "lied". I once noticed Mary McCarthy ending a line of dialogue with "she asseverated" and had to stop reading and go to the dictionary."

I wouldn't say that you should NEVER use anything other than said, but use synonyms sparingly. Any professional editor will tell you that one of the biggest and most irritating mistakes that amateur writers make is trying desperately hard to avoid repeating 'said' all the time, for exactly the reasons that Leonard outlines here. If your writing lacks variety, you need to think about varying sentence structure, rhythm etc instead.

'Questioned', 'Interrogated', 'Decreed', 'Exclaimed'. 'Shifted' is the only one I can come up with. Try thesaurus.com.
