we started a non profit and want to make it fair but we are also trying to make a living. How much can we make as founder and director of the non profit?

If you are founding a charitiable non-profit and expect to obtain tax exemption from the IRS, you get nada. If you are organizing a biz as a non-profit, you cannot pay yourself any sort of amount the IRS might find "unreasonable." Therefore, you have to find out what other non-profits with similar gross sales/gross income are paying their staff: director, administrative assistant, accountant, other staff. The head of a multi-million dollar ($5-10M annual sales/income) non-profit might make $100,000 - 200,000/yr.
