"If you're not Liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not Conservative when you're 35, you have?

...no brain" It is said that Churchill made this statement (though it seems unlikely) How much do you agree with it (him)

Update:

If all you smartarses will read the question fully, I state that I believe it was not him who said it. The point is not who said it, but how true you believe the statement to be

There is no evidence he ever said that:

    Misattributed

    * If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain.

o According to research by Mark T. Shirey, citing Nice Guys Finish Seventh: False Phrases, Spurious Sayings, and Familiar Misquotations by Ralph Keyes, 1992, this quote was first uttered by mid-nineteenth century historian and statesman François Guizot when he observed, Not to be a republican at 20 is proof of want of heart; to be one at 30 is proof of want of head. This quote has been attributed variously to George Bernard Shaw, Benjamin Disraeli, Otto von Bismarck, and others.

o Furthermore, the Churchill Centre, on its Falsely Attributed Quotations page, states "there is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this." Paul Addison of Edinburgh University is quoted as stating: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie, who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?"

o Variants: Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has no heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains.

Show me a young conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains.

If you are not a socialist by the time you are 25, you have no heart. If you are still a socialist by the time you are 35, you have no head

"Anyone who is under 25 and is not a liberal, does not have a heart and anyone who is over 30 and is not a conservative, does not have a brain."

    Mashak, Don on Politics

As we mature, the realities of life replace the simplistic views that we enjoyed in our youth. It is not a matter of brains, it is a matter of facing the fact that there is not always an easy repair to the world's problems. There are those who continually live their life in a Utopia where there is always an easy, simple way to fix the ills of the world. It is hard for them to accept that there are those who will never negotiate and see an attempt to negotiate as a weakness to take advantage of. They never accept the fact that force may have to be used as the only solution. So, yes, there is validity to the statement.

that's an overstatement. once you're youthful, you have those idealistic notions. Like thinking in case you purely supply the damaging extra money, they does not be damaging from now on. yet in certainty that if a man or woman does not learn how to be sensible with their money, you may desire to grant them a million and that they may well be purely a damaging in a 12 months or 2. once you grow previous and meet people who get themselves fired time after time and not have any money stored up because of the fact they spend each little bit of money they make. My brother buys each type of neat contraptions for the youngsters and takes them out to consume for all time as a result he consistently struggles with the charges and does not have any money to pay to restoration the motor vehicle while it breaks. once you spot issues like this, you spot that only forking over money many times does not help human beings yet commonly facilitates them to make undesirable judgements.

We all tend to become less optimistic as we get older and the panaceas of our youth turn out to be wishful thinking. The world is far more complex and the way it changes is far less predictable than most people realise, and the constant bumping up against this reality tends to make people more despairing of progress.

That said: I still hold to the basically radical ideals of my youth. I might have some different ideas about how to achieve them but I still think you have to begin with the idea that we are all part of one another and the brotherhood of all mankind. I will always reject the basically Hobbesian philosophy of each man at war with all others which seems to mark out some American thinking. So much of life is chance and if you do not look out for your neighbour who will look out for you when the wheel turns?

Well I believe the first part.. let me rephrase it... " If you're not Liberal when you're 25 you have no heart. If you're not Conservative when you're 35, you are all heart and you don't suck up to the big corporations...... especially if you reside in Canada...... :)

When I think of the Conservatives in Canada, the movie the Wizard of Oz comes to mind with one of the characters singing......" If I only had a Brain " :)

    Over time definitions change .

The Liberals and Conservatives of Churchill's day are not the same kind of people who carry those banners today.

  • 1 decade ago

i believe churchill DID say that, but i could be wrong....

however, this being america, it should be paraphrased to "if you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. if you're not a conservative when you're 35, you haven't accepted Jesus as your personal savior and you need to get right with God!"

I'd say the opposite is true. If you're not Conservative when you're 35, you've not stopped thinking.

Aren't the Liberals just Tory helper monkeys now?

Odd how I never came across that particular statement while reading up on Churchill in my World War II studies.
