What specifically do libertarians dislike about the Civil Right Act?
I've been told Rand Paul and other libertarians have problems against the civil rights bill of 1964. What's the main complaint?
Great answers, and no, I wasn't watching mainstream media. I wouldn't be caught dead doing that. I was talking to a libertarian today and he decided not to elaborate on his position.

You've been lied to by the left. Rand Paul and libertarians are not 'against' the civil rights act. In fact Rand explain many times (too many times IMO) that he supports the civil rights act as it applies to public institutions.
The argument is whether or not you have the right to do private business with whomever you choose VOLUNTARILY. This is really a no brainer, in a private business you should have the right to do business with whomever you want, and not do business with whomever you want, for whatever reason you want.

No because whether you are Conservative or Libertarian a society that can't guarantee the rights of all can be said to be Fascistic or at least undemocratic and to some degree totalitarian. So I disagree with Ron Paul without questioning his motives, Hope this helps

Libertarians are not all lined up on this issue but those who oppose it say it is a government intrusion into private affairs
If I want to deny access to my home to any group for whatever reason that is my right....but if I own a bar I cannot deny ANYONE access...on private property
The AMERICAN way to establish such things is that anyone who makes racist rules like this should be boycotted and they will go out of business
Government should be about social order and equal justice under the law
Not forcing someone at gun point to be politically correct
If some dude wants to be a racist pig that is his right....and it is my right to not spend my money at his place....if society agrees with me then he is out of business or changes his tune
or society disagrees and society is openly admiting to be a bunch of stupid, racist pedophile wanna bes
and the problem is addressed as it should be...privately and with a REAL resolution not some crappy legal band-aid to a problem
Source(s): Personally don't like the Act but I also see the need for it so overall torn over it - dasuberdingLv 71 decade ago
There isn't any complaint except the spin by the left over Rand Paul's comments. What he said was taken out of context to fit their agenda. Common tactic from the Joseph Goebbels's School of Propaganda.

i read an article that cleared up the idea of Rand Paul regarding the civil rights act... it has absolutely nothing to do with race at all. There are civil rights suits about all kinds of things OTHER than race and this and this ONLY is Rand Paul referring to. At first i thought he was talking about civil rights as pertaining to the black race but i stand corrected and agree with his stand now.

Thats a good question, many people think it was either conservatives or liberals who were against the Civil Rights Act but 80% of conservatives and 65% of liberals voted for the Civil Rights Act, Less than 50% of Libertarians voted for the Act.

They honestly believe that Macy's for instance should be allowed to turn away a black (or white, Asian, gay, disabled, Muslim, Christian, etc.) person for no other reason than the color of their skin. They think government should allow businesses to discriminate. The problem with this argument is that 50 years ago, when discrimination was legal, blacks in the South were at a major disadvantage because companies would not hire them, they had fewer choices in terms of restaurants and groceries, and they were not allowed to integrate into the society at large. That is why there is so much segregation even today. This aspect of Libertarianism serves the interests of racists and hurts blacks (and others).

Libertarians do not like that the government has a say in who they can or can't hire, and who they can or can't offer their business services to. They believe that the government should have as little say in our daily lives as possible. This belief is not necessarily racist, but does not prevent racist business practices.

We don't want the government to be big and powerful enough to say who is able to go on PRIVATE property. We hate racism, but that doesn't mean we want to use force and coercion to get our way.
