This is a big favourite in England - basically its sliced bread and butter with egg custard poured over plus spices and dried fruit. If you sprinke it with brown sugar it goes slightly crunchy on top. I know there are different ways of making it !! It is nice with custard or even clotted cream- but very fattening- don't eat it much for that reason! It is a dish to use up sliced bread and butter that's gone a bit hard. Nigella Lawson does a variation with French Croissants-it also works well with stale hot cross buns! @Outhaval Your comment made me laugh! Boarding school dinners-I know what you mean-everything overcooked and not enough of it! I am exactly the same-can't look at macaroni cheese since school days. The breakfasts were the worst-did you have lumpy porridge?OMG! Cold toast too-although I now can't eat that any other way.
