More people in the U.S. own cats than dogs now. Yet dogs still hold a "cultural" attention. Why so?
His this do to history or our nature? And why have cats gained so much ground in our homes in just the last two decades?

Dogs have been domesticated twice as long as cats.In some ways dogs are more useful guard dogs, guide dogs, hunting, sheep dogs etc. In Britain in urban cities mice could become a problem and that was when the cat came into its own. It was the reason I got one and have loved them ever since. They are graceful and beautiful and when they want to be just as affectionate as dogs and they are not so high maintenance. I guess it is just a matter of preference. Cats have been reviled down history witches mediums bad luck but now they are coming into their own

I am not totally sure about that. Where did you get your facts. Although there are more and more apartment owners that will allow cats rather then dogs, so people figure they can get a cat as a pet in a apartment.

Interesting question.
Maybe because cats are more independent. There are also more cats in the U.S. than dogs.
