How do I adjust my rear derailleur?

The problem I am having is my chain wants to move up to the next gear. It is only happening when it is in 5th at this point. I have almost eliminated this by adjusting the cable adjuster clockwise. There is still a bit of noise. The cable adjuster is turned clockwise as far as it will go. Not sure what else to do at this point. Short of taking it to the bike shop and waiting for a week to get it looked at.

screw your micro adjuster back in all the way, then put the chain on the smallest chainring on your cassette by using the shifter, release the cable from the rear mech, now use your high and low screws to line up the rear mech with the smallest gear,it should be the top screw of the 2 on the rear mech, once you have done this pull through any slack in your gear cable and then re-attach your cable to the rear mech, then adjust your gears as you would normally do.this should solve the problem

for bob-if,after all the adjustments using the micro adjuster has'nt worked then that means the rear mech wasn't aligned proprely when it was first cabled up,this means he has to start from the beginning and re-align the rear mech to be able to sort out the problem, therefore he must use the high and low screws to fix it,thats what they are there for!

Make sure the shifter cable is seated in all cable mounts on the bike. cables tend to stretch not get shorter. If the cable is seated properly try this, don't adjust any of the B, H, or L screws.
