colic and my horses am i paranoid?
everyone else i know had their horses out permantly weeks ago. i was still bringing my boys in to the stable. i had them turned out during the daytime.but in during the night. i have gradually left them out longer and longer and now they are out overnight.everyone said i should have done this weeks ago.as i was only making more work for myself.but when i boarded my horse at the stables i now own. the owner had all the horses out first oppertunity they could get . my tb was nearly wiped out with colic and injured me also [rolled on me] so now i like to slowly ease them on to the new grass . am i doing the right thing or am i just wrapping my horses in cotton wool also if its raining they are brought until it stops and a few hours during the hottest days so they can get a break from the flies and get flyspray put on what do you think [they are both old 24 / 35 yrs]

you do what you want with your horses
its nothing to do with anyone else at all
its so easy to get carried away with the flow and you end up doing it cos everyone else is
you sound like a very caring person who obviously bothers with their horses ,,and if you want to make more work for your self that's your business
sometimes its worth doing it for your own peace of mind
they are your horses and you know them best its not like their young so will need that bit more tlc
so you keep it up your doing a grand job with them

After all they are your horses and under your care and supervision, so you can do what ever you want with them regardless what everyone else is doing with theirs. Your horses are definitely seniors so will require a bit more TLC I find that if I leave my horses out 24/7 365 days a year they do not need the adjustment time for the grass thing since it is pretty well chewed all year round. Being outside is one of the best things that one can do for their horse. I have had them live well into their 30's and one reached 40 years of age..all were out at all times night and day, and in the pasture with grass. Not once did they colic because of it. All horses are individuals, they can colic at the drop of a hat , maybe too much to eat, maybe not enough to eat, maybe ate the wrong thing. maybe the heat, maybe the cold, there is a pattern here. You may be overdoing it a bit, but if that is what you want to do and you don't mind the extra work and time then go for it.

You are not overreacting. Colic is incredibly common and can be very serious. It can be easy for your horse to get colic so I think its very responsible of you, especially if you have already had a bad experience with colic.
Bringing them in when it rains is nice for your horses, it prevents rain rot and well I wouldn't want to stand out in the rain getting soaked. On the other hand, horses put up with the rain in the wild and it can be a refreshing break from hot weather.
Bringing them in to a nice cool, shaded stable in the midheat of summer is nice for a horse, stops them from getting overheated and lets them get away from the flys somewhat but flyspray makes life even more barable in the hot summer heat.
I think everything you're doing for your horses is responisble and you should carry on. (:
Hope that helps (: x
