Everyone who knows the technology has known all along that the oil will stop flowing when the relief wells are finished in August. That's what happened with the Ixtoc1 well in 1979 and pretty much every other disaster of this type. The top hat containments like the sombero containment of Ixtoc1 can't achieve a mechanical seal and top kills aren't possible because there's too much damage to allow for recycling the drilling mud which means you have to to have a constant source of new drilling mud and that's not possible regardless of how many supply ships you have. Everything they're doing before August 1st is just an attempt to slow down the flow to minimize the fines that will be assessed.

BP knows this, the government knows this but while the oil is flowing, it's in the media's interest and the politicians interests to keep the issue on the front page rather than explaining how it's likely to play out.

Unfortunately John W is correct. I cannot imagine the destruction going on for another TWO months.

    I still say prison time.

Simple. All we have to do is shove those BP executives in the hole.
