Help on Algebra word problems?

1. Beth earned $170 in interest in an investment. If she receives 5%, how much money did beth invest that help her earn $170?

2. A club sells tickets to a event for $8 for children and $10 for adults. If the total number of tickets sold for the event was 220 and the total amount received sales was $2030, how many children's tickets and how many adult tickets were sold?

    1. You could also ask the question this way: what number time 5% equals 170? To make this an algebraic expression:

    Let x = the principle amount of the investment

    Interest earned = 170

    Interest rate = 5%

    0.05x = 170

    x = 170 divided by 0.05

    Therefore, x= 3400

    Beth invested $3400 to earn $170 in interest

    2. In this question you have a system of linear equations with 2 variables.

    Let x = the number of children's tickets sold, y = number of adult tickets sold

    x+y = 220 (the total number of tickets sold)

    Since we also know that children's tickets are $8, and adult tickets are $10, and the total sales were $2030, we can write the following equation:

    8x + 10y = 2030. This can be simplified to 4x + 5y = 1015 (always simplify equations if you can!)

    The steps to solve this system of equations are:

    1) MULTIPLY one of the equations by a number so that the y or the x coefficient is the opposite of what it is in the other equation

    2) ADD the equations together (this cancels out one of the variables)

    3) SOLVE for the remaining variable

    4) SUBSTITUTE that variable back into the original equations to solve for the other variable.

    so... MULTIPLY 4x + 5y = 1015 by -1/5, to get -4/5 x -y = -203

    ADD this to the other equation: x - 4/5x +y -y = 220 - 203

    1/5x = 17

    SOLVE for x x = 85

    SUBSTITUTE this into the original equations: 85 + y = 220 4(85) + 5y = 1015

    y = 220 - 85 5y = 1015 - 340

    y = 135 5y = 675

    y = 135

    Therefore, the club sold 85 children's tickets, and 135 adult tickets.

    Hope this helps!

    1. Interest = principal times rate times time, in years

    since there is no time, I ASSUME they meant 1 year. If not, the following answer is wrong.

    i=prt

    170=p ( 5%)(1)

    divide by 5%

    p= 3400

    p stands for principal which means the money

    2. let c= number of children's tickets and a= number of adult tickets.

    there are two equations: c+a = 220 and 8c+10a=2030 ( from the price of the tickets)

    In the equation c+a=220, subtract a from both sides

    c= -a+220

    Substitute that new equation in the second one where the c is now.

    8( -a+220) +10a +2030

    use the distributive property

    -8a + 1760 +10a =2030

    combine like terms

    2a +1760 =2030

    subtract 1760 form both sides

    2a=270

    divide by 2

    a=135

    Remember a stood for the number of adult tickets so there were 135 adult tickets sold.

    replace 135 with a in the first equation and you find that there were 8 5 children's tickets sold.

    If you multiply the number of tickets by the cost of the tickets you'll see these numbers work.

    1. Is it i = prt / 100

    Simple interest = (principal x interest rate x time) divided by 100.

    so $170 = ( P x 5% x 1 ) / 100

    P = ........your answer.......

    2. Let x be the no. of tickets sold to children,

    and y be the no. of tickets sold to adults.

    x + y = 220 ----(1)

    8x + 10y = 2030 ----(2)

    Simultaneous..

    (1) x 8 , 8x + 8y = 1760 ----(3)

    (2) - (3) , 2y = 2030 - 1760

    y = 270/2

    = 135

    When y = 135,

    x = 220 - 135

    = 85

    Therefore, 85 children tickets and 135 adult tickets were sold.

    If the scholars modern-day grade is a ninety% then we’re of direction assuming it’s out of a hundred% ninety/a hundred Now by using fact the scholars grade better 20% from the final grading era then you certainly upload that to the previous a hundred% supplying you with ninety/ a hundred and twenty = .seventy 5 and because grades are in probabilities you multiply .seventy 5 by potential of a hundred supplying you with seventy 5% by using fact the scholars previous grade

    1 Seriously, dude, simple interest or compound interest, and over how much time // compounding periods? or just do X * .05 = 170 and solve for ...........(something)

    #2 2 variables, 2 equations, style is standard throughout math.
