Why did I lose all compression in my 1965 Volvo engine when I blew the head gasket?

My son, a good mechanic, installed a new head gasket and valve cover gasket, we changed the oil and filter and when finished we tried to start it but only heard the sound of the starter not the engine sounds. We pulled a plug and there was no compression...the fan turned as well as the distributor rotor but the distributor body now turns is not locked on. Opened the oil filler cap and the rocker arms are moving. This is a gear driven not a timing chain. I'm looking for an experienced mechanics response not opinions.

Update:

No valve job was done...we have rebuilt this engine about 50,000 miles ago. It does not have a chain or belt it is gear driven. The head was torqued down with no leaks.

If you are sure that the gakset has sealed correctly, then the only answer is that the engine valve timing is WAY OFF. If the valves remain open on the compression stroke, no power compression will occur. Did you hae a valve job done when the head was off??? some compression loss occurs if the valves do not seal. Perhaps you should buy a Haynes manual. Does engine have a timing belt or timing chain?? I would assume that it has a belt. In 1965, Volvo engines were push rod type, I think. You may need to do a valve clearance adjustment. GOOD LUCK!!

check timing first, you need to do a cylinder leak down test and find out were its all going.Close valves for one cylinder at a time and put it on TDC on compression stroke and do the test see if it comes out exhaust, intake ,Radiator or oil dipstick tube that should give you a idea what to do next.

out of time and bolt down the disturber.
