Does anybody know this science fiction short story?

searching for a specific story

One of my favorite stories as a kid was a sci-fi short story about a society that lived on a planet where lives were dramatically shortened (aging was accelerated). All life - plant, animal, human - was active during the precariously short hours of dusk and dawn, as the sun was hot enough to burn every living thing to ash, I cannot remember much about the nights except that in the caves where the people lived there was a desperate search for some means of slowing down the lives of the people living there. The hero of the story rejects the belief that a scientific solution could be found and follows the hints in old legends, bravely racing the sun in search of legendary haven....he finds a space ship that has environmental controls that also slows down his aging process - after resting from his ordeal in crossing the desert, the hero returns to the caves of his birth and finds that he is still young while his scientist sister is aged. i can't remember how it ended after all these years, but i cannot forget that story either.

All I know for certain is that the story was published in a collection of science fiction short stories sometimes before spring of 1981, but i can't remember the name or author.
