The article I'm looking for is about a DC lawyer who became famous for defending soldiers in california during the vietnam war and then was almost shipped to vietnam as punishment, a prominent journalist heard of his case and wrote about it enough that his deployment was overturned
He then went to work for a DC law firm that is famous for taking on ridiculous cases where the person is basically definitely guilty. Also prosecutors go to jail more often than not when they take on this firm.

I think that a lot of what you have heard is false or exaggerated, but I think the lawyer you are seeking is Michael Tigar.
