Survey: Is anyone else considering stopping watching the news as well?

I like keeping up to date, but its all just so sad right now. Something about rolling news just seems to make things worse.

Update:

Was intended for P&S but this section seemed more pertinent

Update 2:

Nite Owl; Very good point. I usually source my news from a few different places and try to hold onto perspective but its not always easy

even if u do stop watching it it's not gonna stop all the horrible sh*t from happening.

personally, when i watch something bad on the news, i feel sorry at the time but as soon as the news finishes i forget all about it and continue with my life. sounds harsh but most people do tht

I do not own a TV, but I do read the news via my laptop, hear it in the radio, and find I can pick and choose topics a little better on the web.

But I do agree that the news is depressing, murder, (unsolvable) conflicts, molestations, unemployment, fiddling millionaires, even farcical football now!

I can understand people not wanting to know too much about the Cumbrian murders, I believe it will be disclosed that Bird was suffering from depression, and that scares me in itself, for I am depressed. Realising this, the mind starts to work in horrific ways, and this is uncomfortable indeed.

Each person will find their way of coping with disastrous alarming news.

But the futility realised when finding out you cannot prevent any repetition of the incidents, may well cause depression within the newsreader.

There's always something to be sad about, sometimes seeing the stories puts things in perspective for me if Im feeling a little sorry for myself. Not seeing it reported won't mean bad things aren't happening and at least people being aware of events ensures that something constructive gets done. (usually) So in a way you are helping just by being an audience. Maybe a short break is in order sometimes, a chance to smell the coffee, feel the sun & appreciate the good things in life.

Goatboy, (spell check didn't spell your name correctly) =)

I keep saying I'm going to stop watching the news. It is so depressing and I can't do anything about it, except complain. I get curious. Have they stopped the oil? Is Blago going to the slammer? Did the Dutch boy kill again? Is Obama going to show some real emotion? Stuff like that. The days when I listen to music all day and not watch the news are more peaceful but my curiosity takes over.

stopped about 8 years ago .

got bored with wanting to smash my telly the people the news brought to my attetnion started to colour my world view unfairly and make me misanthropic. something i am not - i love poeple, they're funny kind and charming. What News they tell you is part of how each of us is disenfanchised - it's preferable you fear it keeps you staying out of trouble ( ie in your home scared) they lay it on thick picking the most groteque stories of evil they can find to be the News and pumping our heads full of a world filled with dangerous people and the idea it's not safe to go out; well it is safe to go out ...so instead of being controlled let's enjoy some hot weather and smile at the pretty girls sunning themselves eh?

Youre falling for it when thats exactly what its designed to do.

Its called the dumbing down of society.

In UK just add alcohol to media junkies and parrots.

And youre anybody's pushover for 6 quid an hour.
