Why is America the greatest nation on earth?
I hear this from my fellow Americans every day. But I never hear exactly why they think it so. On what do they base this statement? Have they lived in other countries or spent extensive time overseas for comparative purposes? Are there those who disagree? I don't want sarcastic or mindless answers, please.

The industrial age of America rose it to greatness. We built 300,000 aircraft in less that 3 years to fight the war with mainly women on the assembly line. At one point, America built 80% of all the automobiles made in the world. America built everything. Radio's. Telephones. Refrigerators, Washers, Dryers, TV.s. Steele, coal, and all things fabric. We built a space craft that put a man on the Moon in less that 10 years. We built the highways that allowed travel coast to coast. Through mountains and valleys. America was exceptional. We have lost our exceptionalisim due to poor planning and laziness. We don't build anything anymore. It's all off shore. We lost our way due to policies that have undermined the greatness of America.

Everyone either thinks their nation is the best on earth, or they are ridiculed by those that do. If you don't love your country, you're a dangerous radical. If you don't love the military, you want your country to be invaded and you don't appreciate the few freedoms you do have. Sure you can say what you want, but join a movement that seeks real change and you'll be ridiculed and dismissed for your views.
Sorry, I do not view America as the best country on earth, but not because I hate America. I don't see countries as good things, the way i see it they limit freedom and keep the people separated.

First of all, America is a continent. Your country's name is "The United States OF America". You are not the whole America, just part OF it, see the difference? North America is comprised of Canada AND the United States. South America is comprised of many countries, such as Mexico, Columbia, etc.
Second, the United States is NOT the greatest nation on earth. Your fellow Americans are in denial about how other nations view Americans. Europeans don't like American tourists, neither do Middle Easterns ( I wonder why...?) Many people view Americans as obnoxious, loud-mouthed, gun-toting, know-it-alls and wouldn't spit on one if it was on fire. Now, I happen to like Americans as individuals, but as a nation, not so much. I don't like the condescending attitude your country has for the rest of the world. (Come on, you know you do! Just look at all the jokes you make about Canada, which by the way, is much higher on the list of best countries to live in than the United States.)
The world's best nation, according to a recent research poll, is Sweden. Factors taken into consideration were the economy, environmental laws and guidelines, criminality, violence, unemployment, family life, health care, social services, government, etc.
Better luck next time!

I don't think America is the greatest nation on earth anymore. We have misused our freedoms and been so apathetic for so long that our culture has deteriorated into a bunch of sex-crazed, self-entitled whiners, our borders are being invaded every minute of every day, atheism is the religion of choice, and a communist is in the White House. It's only going to get worse. America is a falling superpower and a disintegrating democracy. It's hard to watch.

Not now, that was lost during Bush's administration when he bullied his way to force allies to help him in the Iraq war. He threatened others with this term: either you are with us or against us.
To dictate to other countries what to do, he acted like a dictator. A country with a dictator forever lost its place as a great country.
Rikk, you are wrong, if you know history, then you know that no country had ever been blessed with dominance for 2000 years - only China. I bet that USA will be overtaken in less than 50 years. For a country to dominate for less than 100 years, that is not any god-given blessing!

The answer is The United States Of America are better (than most) because of the government system. however the States are morally decaying and if the decay is not reversed we will become one of the worst nations.

Because we used to have a strong middle class. That is what makes or breaks a country. Too much separation between rich and poor leads to a country's demise. There are countless examples.

I think America is the greatest nation on earth because we are free to speak, print anything we desire. We are free to govern ourselves with representation. We used to be powerful as other countries came to us for money and military support and still do depend on us for military support. People come here from all over the world for medical reasons, educational reasons, and a better way of life, etc.. I have often wondered where I would like to live other than the US and I cannot think of anything.
