Ubuntu file permissions?
I want to just make my windows-containing hard drive read-only in Ubuntu. I know not to mess with windows system files but I'm not the only one using this computer. Is there some way to protect my Windows OS files? I've tried to change permissions of the folder though they just fall back their original setting.

The only way to do this would be to mount the Windoze partition as read only. The problem is that Ubuntu or any other version of Linux or *nix that can read NTFS will be able to ignore the file permissions. If you have a FAT partition, there are no file permissions to ignore.
If you restrict the user accounts on Ubuntu, you may get it to selectively use some of the Windoze permissions. The main problem is that the operating systems are incompatible and each use different methods of defining permissions.
If you can force Ubuntu to only mount the partition as read only and require root to override it, that will protect your Windoze partition. Otherwise, I'd suggest restricting all Ubuntu accounts so that no one could use Ubuntu.

An extreme method is to not mount the Windows drive/partition at all by editing your /etc/fstab file.
